Swim Team Meets

Swim Meets

Our meet schedule is designed to allow swimmers a chance to compete  within their age group and feel a sense of accomplishment.  Please remember that meet participation is optional, however participation in meets allows the monitoring of your child’s progress.  In addition, swimming in a competition enhances learning and stroke development.

Meet Format and Events

All regular meets are called “dual meets” with one team swimming against another to test individual and group strength in each age group.  Each team is allowed three entries in each event.

Coaches are responsible for placing swimmers in appropriate events.  Swimmers and parents are encouraged to accept these decisions, which are made in the interest of both the swimmer and the team.  Swimmers earn their places on relay teams.  Selection is based on times established during individual events and coaches’ discretion.

There are five age divisions in our league:  6 and Under, 7/8 year olds, 9/10 year olds, 11/12 year olds, and 13 and over.  Each child competes in the age group of his or her actual age.  If the child has a birthday on the day of the event, that child must swim at this new age level.

The girls’ events precede boys’ events in each age division.  The 6 and Under and 7/8 year olds age groups swim 25 meter individual events and relays. The exception is the IM where each swimmer swims 25 meters of each stroke for a total of 100 meters.  All other age groups swim two laps or 50 meters for all individual events and relays.  This age group also swims 100 meters for the IM.  See below for meet schedule of events.

Description of Events

Medley Relay– Four swimmers form a team and each individual swims one of the four strokes.  They swim the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.

Individual Medley– One swimmer swims each of the four strokes in this order; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.

Freestyle Relay– Four swimmers form a team and each individual swims freestyle.

Disqualifications (DQs)

A stroke and turn judge must disqualify (DQ) a swimmer for illegal strokes and/or turns. A DQ is an official disqualification of a swimmer’s race. Only stroke and turn judges can DQ swimmers.

Below are some of the reasons why DQs are given:

Freestyle:  Swimmer turns too soon and fails to touch the end of the pool or jumps off the bottom of pool during the race.

Backstroke:  Swimmer executes an incorrect flip turn or turns onto his/her front before touching the end of the pool at the finish of a race.

Breaststroke: Swimmer takes more than one complete stroke underwater after entry dive or turn, fails to touch the wall with two hands on turn and/or finish, or executes an incorrect kick.

Butterfly: Swimmer incorrectly place his/her arms, uses an incorrect kick, or fails to touch the wall with two hands on turn and/or finish.

Important:  If your child signs up to participate in a meet and subsequently is unable to participate, please email or call Coach Agatha as soon as possible so adjustments can be made in the line-ups. Missing swimmers cause meet delays. Please be courteous and let the coaches know if you cannot make a meet.
